Functional Testing

Test don’t guess and put your mind at rest

Functional testing can sometimes be the best way to get to the root cause of your symptoms. It provides vital information about how your body is functioning, why you have certain symptoms and highlights any imbalances.

You may have been suffering from health issues for a while and struggling to get the answers you need. Testing can often provide the final piece to the puzzle you have been looking for. I work with leading private functional testing laboratories which helps determine the right course of action for you and guarantees the highest quality.

So what are the benefits?

Takes away the guess-work as results pinpoint the root cause of your symptoms

Faster, more effective results with personalised plans targetting any specific imbalances identified

Baseline to measure your progress which encourages you to adopt changes to improve your health

Functional testing may be a blood, saliva, urine or stool test, most of which can easily be done at home. If you require a blood draw, I will arrange for a nurse to visit your home or you can attend a local phlebotomy service.

Here are some of the tests I offer…

Gut Health and Microbiome Stool Test

A comprehensive gut health and microbiome stool test, analysing gut function, microbial diversity and the presence of disease-related bacteria, yeast, fungal overgrowth and parasites.

It checks 7 health markers to assess inflammation, immune function, digestion, gut barrier and occult blood as well as 62 microbial markers related to IBD, short chain fatty acid production, gut barrier impairment (leaky gut), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and imbalanced gut bacteria (dysbiosis).

Key markers include:
• Beneficial and pathogenic bacteria (including H Pylori)
• Yeast (eg; Candida) and fungal markers
• Parasites and viruses
• Enzyme status
• Immune system markers
• Zonulin (leaky gut marker)

Why you need this test?
You have any digestive issues including bloating, flatulence, abdominal cramps, acid reflux, indigestion, heartburn, constipation, diarrhoea, fluctuating bowel movements or food sensitivities.

You have other symptoms which may be caused by digestive imbalances including migraines, headaches, fatigue, low energy, brain fog, skin issues, depression, anxiety, joint pain, cravings or unexplained weight gain.

SIBO Breath Test

SIBO is a common condition characterised by excessive bacteria in the small intestine. The SIBO Breath Test is non-invasive and shows you what’s going on inside your gut. By assessing any imbalances of hydrogen and methane in your small intestine, you find out what’s contributing to your symptoms.

The most common method for testing is the lactulose breath test. During this test, a lactulose solution is ingested, after which breath samples are taken at regular intervals to measure the levels of hydrogen and methane gases. Increased levels of these gases indicate the presence of bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

Studies suggest that 70-80% of individuals with IBS may have SIBO as an underlying cause of their symptoms.

Why you need this test?
You have IBS, IBD, bloating or abdominal distension, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, leaky gut, nausea, belching, GERD, malabsorption, weight gain or loss, rosacea, headaches, chronic stress, fatigue, depression, anxiety, poor sleep, insomnia or brain fog.

You suffer from gastric dysmotility from stress, PPI use, chronic diabetes, post-viral syndromes, coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, antibiotic use, fibromyalgia, hypothyroid or metabolic disease.

You have a connective tissue disorder (Marfan’s/Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome/Joint Hypermobility Syndrome)

Adrenal Stress Profile

This test uncovers biochemical imbalances underlying stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue and other conditions which can impact your overall quality of life. It provides an assessment of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and your stress response/resilience.

Key markers include:
This saliva test measures levels of your stress hormones, cortisol and DHEA.
4 cortisol samples are measured throughout the day which give insight into the natural circadian diurnal cortisol rhythm and help address specific daily stressors.
DHEA is measured once in the 7:00am – 9:00am sample.
Ratio of DHEA to cortisol is calculated to provide insight into anabolic/catabolic balance.

Cortisol and DHEA imbalances affect thyroid function, cardiovascular function, metabolism, energy levels, weight management, sleep, blood sugar regulation and anti-inflammatory response and resistance to stress.

Why you need this test?
You’ve been suffering from chronic fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, brain fog, cognitive decline, anxiety, depression, cravings, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal complaints, immune dysregulation, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, persistent pain.
